High Street and small-town living
High Street is the heart of it: an open-air main street with shops, restaurants, services and a grocery store, built for pedestrians rather than parking lots. Very few Calgary suburbs let you walk to dinner, coffee and errands the way this one does.
Each of the community’s three residential villages — Inverness, Prestwick and Elgin — has its own character, pond and parks, from Inverness Pond’s walking loops to Prestwick’s splash park and Elgin’s wetlands. Residents also get access to McKenzie Towne Hall, a private facility with year-round programs, plus an outdoor rink and a skate park. It’s a community that was planned around bumping into your neighbours, and it works.
Schools
Three schools operate inside the community: McKenzie Towne School for early public elementary grades, McKenzie Highlands School for the public middle years, and St. Albert the Great School, a K-9 Catholic school. High school students are typically designated to schools in the surrounding area, so check current boundaries with the boards — designations have moved over the years as the southeast has grown.
Location and commute
McKenzie Towne sits at the junction of 130th Avenue and Deerfoot Trail, giving it arguably the best access in the quadrant. South Trail Crossing’s big-box shopping borders the community, downtown is typically 20 to 30 minutes by car, and Calgary Transit’s bus rapid transit service along 52nd Street makes this one of the easier southeast commutes without a vehicle.
The McKenzie Towne market
McKenzie Towne offers some of the most attainable pricing in the southeast thanks to its broad mix of condos, townhomes and compact single-family homes, up through larger detached homes in Inverness. If you’re hunting for a first home with real neighbourhood character, this is often where I start the tour — ask me for the latest CREB® price bands before you begin.
Thinking about buying or selling in McKenzie Towne?
I’ve been selling McKenzie Towne homes since 2005, and I still smile every time I drive past the clock tower. If you’re curious what your home is worth, or you want a guide who knows Prestwick from Elgin from Inverness, call or text me at 403-923-7253 for a free home evaluation.
